Born in London, John Midgley grew up in Nairobi, Paris and London, where his mother, a painter, used to drag him around to see art house films and art exhibitions. That first contact with painting and film finds its way into his work to this day. His first introduction to photography came at age seven, when he modelled for Sarah Moon in Paris.
John studied photography at Bournemouth and Pool College of Art and Design. While still studying he won an award at the Association of Photographers in London for an image that was taken from a series he shot in Paris based on the memory of growing up there. John’s last year at Bournemouth was spent working through ideas to do with memory and journeys. These themes comes back into John’s fashion work to this day. Some of this work is in the archive section of this web site.
John’s first international assignment was in Paris with View on Colour. John has since photographed fashion and celebrities for countless prestigious magazines in the world, including Surface, Interview, Men’s Vogue, Arena, GQ, Esquire, Entertainment Weekly, Wired, Black Book, Exit, 125 and Big.
John has photographed for numerous fashion clients including Hermes, Mac Cosmetics, Kenneth Cole, Banana Republic, Gap, Neiman Marcus, Macy’s, Clarks, Nike and Adidas. His advertising clients include: British Airways, General Electric, Sony, Samsung, LG, Raymond Weil, American Express.
Over the years, John has won numerous awards at the Dutch and English associations of photographers for his fashion work, as well as inclusion in various prestigious fashion annuals, such as Images De Modes (a compilation of the ‘best fashion photography of the year’).
